Description
After
settling
in
Lexington
in
1799
,
Henry
Clay
built
a
new
home
on the
property
in
1809
,
called
"
Ashland
"
due
to the
abundance
of
ash
trees
on the
property
. He
continued
to
add
on to the
house
using
plans
by
Benjamin
Latrobe
, the
architect
of the
Federal
Capitol
.
After
Henry
died
, his
son
,
James
Clay
,
bought
the
mansion
and
tore
it
down
only
to
rebuild
it
on the
existing
foundation
using
the
original
floor
plan
.
Henry
Clay
was
born
on
April
12
,
1777
in
rural
Virginia
.
After
he
became
a
lawyer
he
decided
to
move
to the
growing
state
of
Kentucky
and
settled
in
Lexington
. In
1803
he was
elected
to the
Kentucky
General
Assembly
and
only
five
years
later
, as a
twenty
nine
year
old
he was
chosen
Speaker
of the
House
.
Clay
sought
the
presidency
on
three
separate
occasions
,
1824
, '
32
, and '
44
.
Although
never
the
president
,
Clay
gained
fame
in
many
aspects
of his
political
life
. As "The
Great
Compromiser
"
Clay
devised
the
Missouri
Compromise
and the
infamous
Compromise
of
1850
, he
helped
negotiate
the
Treaty
of
Ghent
, he
played
a
significant
role
in the
survival
of
various
South
American
republics
, and
served
almost
fifty
years
as a
Representative
,
Senator
and
Secretary
of the
State
.
