HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Chaumiere des Prairies was the 330-acre estate of David Meade who moved his
family from Tidewater Virginia to present-day Jessamine County, Kentucky in
1796. Chaumiere was renowned for its sloping lawns, walks, and winding drives
within a park-like setting of trees, shrubbery, and gardens with man-made lakes.
Interspersed through the grounds were alcoves with seats, fountains, statuary,
and an artificial island reached by an arched bridge and containing a small
building designed after a Greek temple. The house, a cluster of one-story
buildings connected by numerous passageways, was constructed of stone, log,
and brick. After Meade's death in 1830, his heirs sold the estate to William
Robards, who destroyed the estate's beauty.
